Truth In Recruiting from VFP Ernest Gruening Chapter

Vets,

At our most recent VFP meeting we got an update from the Truth in Recruiting folks in Anchorage. They are meeting with the school district on April 20. Current ASD policy allows recruiters in schools EVERY SINGLE DAY. In Juneau, the recruiters get 3 days a year. It is time for us to pressure for a reduction in the predation on our young people.

We also need people willing to work with each school in town to provide counter balance to the slick messages of the recruiters. If you would be willing to consider helping out with this, let me know and I will forward your name on to the organizers.

I am going to send a letter from our VFP chapter to the district for your review. Before I do that, if you have any specific instances of excessive recruiting that you can tell me about, I will include it the letter.

In addition, if you would like to fill out a complaint form, here is how to go about it.

Anchorage School District Citizen Complaint Form

Please note: You may use the Citizen’s complaint process to address complaints against any ASD employee, policy, practice or procedure, including rights protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, and Title IX of the Education Amendment Act of 1972.

This form is intended for printing. It is not an online complaint form. Please print the form, fill it out, and mail it to the Superintendent's office according to the instructions found below. Send the completed form to the superintendent’s office, P.O. Box 196614, Anchorage, Alaska, 99519-6614

Use the Anchorage School District's citizen's complaint form (http://www.asdk12.org/aboutasd/ProblemSolv/form.asp ) to voice opinions to the district. The more people ASD hears from the better for our policy movement. Here are some recent events that you might consider voicing an opinion on:

* Presence of military vehicles "on display" at East, West, and

South High Schools

* Marines doing a "push up challenge" in the foyer at West High

* Use of military vehicles in homecoming parades and perhaps the

upcoming Senior Fun days or high school proms

* Daily presence of recruiters in East High Commons during lunch
